To start this LEVEL DESIGN project, I began looking for references and brainstorming ideas. Since I personally really enjoy AAA games that’s big and wild. In the early development I started of having a strict art direction of wanting a theme of ‘desert’, ‘Sci-Fi’, and a walking environment that presents ‘a journey’, referencing movies and games like, Dunes, Love Death + Robots, and Halo. But problems that appear off AAA games that the map is too big and realistic with too much to explore, meaning I need to think of a solution in designing my map. It turns out, I tried, but still created a huge environment many of which is a prototype where I want further development to this environment. Now, as this project emphasis on storytelling, I felt that something dreamlike and abstract would be more interesting. Which made my design decisions to change from a one single explorational scene to three scenes that connects through portals and everlasting as you are continues in cycle of this weird sci-fi world. In terms of aesthetics, mood and visual aspects, instead of the realistic style which means a detailed work and upgrade in all pipelines of my development, I chose to use a 3D render 2D and a dreamy colour palate to create a ‘fantasy’, ‘flat’, ‘cartoon’ style.
